For Todoist users who share a home

Todoist already shares. So why does one person still carry the plan?

Todoist is the fairest comparison here: it shares projects, assigns tasks, and runs everywhere. For many households it works. This guide shows where households still hit limits, and when DuetFlow is the better fit.

Short answer

Todoist lets you share a project and assign each task to one person, even on the free plan. If anyone in your household uses Android or Windows, stay with Todoist. If everyone is on Apple devices and you keep working around “one assignee per task,” or you would rather not keep household and private tasks on a task-app vendor’s servers, DuetFlow is built for exactly that.

Give Todoist its due

Todoist runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android, Windows, and the web. Its free plan allows shared projects with up to five people, natural-language entry is fast, and integrations are everywhere, including an official hosted MCP server for AI assistants and a Home Assistant integration. If your household is mixed-platform, this is the strongest option on the list, and DuetFlow can’t replace it.

Where households still get stuck

A Todoist task has one assignee. “Book the dentist” fits that. “Either of us can pick up the parcel” doesn’t: you leave it unassigned and hope someone notices. “We both renew our passports” doesn’t either: you create two tasks and keep them in sync. Each workaround is small; together they become rules one person has to remember.

Timing is the other gap. Todoist’s own help center says it doesn’t support start dates that hide a task until it is due to start. It does have deadlines. So the list shows everything at once, and “not yet” work crowds out what can happen today. And sharing requires a Todoist account for everyone, with every task stored on Doist’s servers.

Steps in a sequential project unlock in order, so each person sees what they can do now, not everything at once.

How DuetFlow handles the same household

Each task says who is responsible: one person, or several. With several, you pick the completion. Any can complete lets any of them take it, and the first to finish closes it. All must complete gives each person their own checkbox on one task. Private tasks stay yours. Each person opens a Today view that shows what is theirs, and the organizer keeps Inbox, Upcoming, Waiting For, Someday, and projects around it.

Shared data syncs through Apple’s own sharing and your private tasks stay in your own iCloud, so DuetFlow has no server of its own to hold your household. If you want an AI assistant to help, the connection runs inside DuetFlow on your Mac, off until you switch it on, with separate permissions for private and household tasks.

Which one to choose

Choose Todoist if you need Android, Windows, or the web, if you want to start for free today, or if one assignee per task covers how your household works. Choose DuetFlow if everyone is on Apple devices, you want ownership that matches real household tasks, and you would rather pay once than subscribe.

A quick check

Look at your shared Todoist project and count the unassigned tasks and the duplicates. If there are few, Todoist is doing its job. If they are piling up, that is the friction DuetFlow was designed to remove.
